The upcoming Fire Emblem game (known as If in Japan) is taking bold leaps that the series has never seen before. In the exciting new trailer revealed during today’s Nintendo Direct, a new story mechanic was shown off. The player’s customizable avatar will be the game’s protagonist, and players will be tasked with choosing sides.

The game’s peace loving Hoshidan clan and the glory loving Nohr clans are waging war. Choosing either side to align with will give you a very different story to progress through. The Hoshidan side will be more welcoming for less experienced Fire Emblem players, and has an accessible story that is similar to past Fire Emblem games. Taking the Nohr side will get you a more complex story with greater challenge.
