In shocking news, the newly revealed sequel to 2013’s Tomb Raider, Rise of the Tomb Raider, will be an Xbox One Exclusive when it is released in 2015. A wild move for a series that saw massive success on all platforms, and a precedent for a series that never had particular bearings in either direction.

Announced during Microsoft’s 2014 Gamescom presser, an image displayed that the game will only appear on Microsoft’s console.

Developer Crystal Dynamics commented in a blog post, which accompanied the press event:

“We know they will get behind this game more than any support we have had from them in the past—we believe this will be a step to really forging the Tomb Raider brand as one of the biggest in gaming, with the help, belief and backing of a major partner like Microsoft.”

No word on whether or not this will be a timed exclusivity deal with Square Enix. However, it does seem to be a pretty drastic move, leaving many players out in the dark. 2013’s Tomb Raider was wildly popular, selling over 6 million copies worldwide and across all platforms. I’d be very surprised if the game does not make it to PS4 and PC. I’m not just saying that because Tomb Raider was one of my favorite games of the last generation.

Additionally, this seems to debunk the rumor that Rise of the Tomb Raider was also coming to last gen platforms.

The game was originally announced at E3 earlier this year. Here is the trailer, which was shown at Microsoft’s E3 conference:
