The newest incarnation of the Worms series is finally upon us, and this time its going back to basics. Fans of this series have for a long time now been divided between 2D and 3D variants of the game. I personally have been always on the side of the 2D version and coming next week we get another 2D Worms game. Its been a few years since we got our last 2D Worms game so lets take a look at the new one.
Gamers that have played Worms 2 Armageddon will be much at home with Battlegrounds. Not much has changed with the exception of a kinda forced in story line and some graphics tweaks. Being as this is the first Worms to make it to the PS4 and One it doesn’t come as much of a surprise that there is a graphics bump but it is always a welcome addition. The detail and design for this game is almost a times a bit much in that it can be hard to guess where an obstacle is compared to the background but after playing a few games its starts to sink in. In my opinion this game would have been served better with some more minimalist settings but this is all minor complaints at best. It’s definitely beautiful to look at.
With the expectation of a few additions there is pretty much the same arsenal as the previous game had with all the violence you come to expect as you blow up, beat, burn, and drown those little fellas. You all know you get way too much pleasure from doing this and you will not be disappointed this time around either.
“I don’t want to hurt you…I just WANT YOUR LIFE!”
The game has a tacked on story line about working for a museum to gather artifacts and stop the worms who are trying to steal them. To be honest the game could have really been better served without this story line in that it really adds nothing to the gameplay and most people will just ignore it.
The soundtrack is pretty much on par with what you would expect from a PSN/XBLA game in that it’s not exactly going to blow your hair back but its passable. Like most Worms games the soundtrack is basically cartoony and fits the theme. I would have liked a little more effort in this department especially with many XBLA/PSN doing very well in this category as of late but its passable.
If you’re looking for a fun Arcady strategy game. I can say the you wont be disappointed with Worms – Battlegrounds but at the end of day I was hoping there would be a little more evolution with the game play but hey…Its Worms.
